Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael Schwartz, recently attended “Plastic Surgery The Meeting” in New Orleans, LA – an event composed of world-renowned plastic surgeons from across the globe – where he lectured on the topic of Sientra® breast implants to around 400 of his fellow medical professionals. Upon his return, we asked him a few questions regarding Sientra® implants and the event.

Q: Are Sientra® implants a new technology?

Dr. Schwartz: Not exactly. In fact, Sientra breast implants spent 20 years on the international market before they were finally granted FDA-approval for utilization by board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States earlier this year. You may have also heard them referred to as “gummy bear implants.”

Q: Why were you selected for the Sientra® panel, and who else joined you?

DS: Having previously traveled to Sweden to learn advanced techniques regarding form-stable implants, I was selected by Sientra® based on my experience and extensive knowledge of their product. I have also performed more surgeries with these implants than most other surgeons in the U.S. I was one of four, hand-selected speakers including Dr. Charles Ranquist, Dr. Grant Stevens, and the founder and CEO of Sientra®, Hani Zeini.

Q: What did you address in your lecture?

DS: Most surgeons in the United States have never used these implants. They do not understand when to use them, nor the differences in patient selection, surgical planning, and surgical technique. My lecture was entitled, “Incorporating Form Stable, Anatomically Shaped Breast Implants into your Current Practice,” and it was designed to inform plastic surgeons about benefits and techniques for the newly-approved implants, as well as teach them how to successfully implement Sientra® implants into their practice as a reliable breast enhancement option.

Q: What other topics were highlighted by the panel?

DS: The panel also discussed updates on research and clinical data for Sientra® implants, how to enhance each patient’s implant selection process, and an overview of the Sientra® implant portfolio showcasing a variety of form-stable implant options.

Q: How does being an educator for Sientra® implants help you enhance the level of care patients receive at your practice and beyond?

DS: Higher levels of knowledge and care translates into better surgical results. At my practice, we pride ourselves on the utmost level of care for all our patients, and surgeons from around the country come to observe and learn about Sientra® implants. Through demonstrations and the spreading of knowledge and techniques, I believe patients all across the nation will receive a higher level of care from their plastic surgeons.
