FAQ: Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasy)

1. Do you have to do it in the O.R. or can it be done in the office?
When patients only need upper eyelid surgery done, this is often possible to do in the office. It is done with local anesthesia and is surprisingly comfortable.

2. How long does it take?
The procedure takes about an hour.

3. Am I bruised or swollen?
There is usually very little bruising and swelling, and stitches are in for five days.

4. Do I need to take pain medication?
While patients are given pain medication, most patients do very nicely with either Tylenol or a Motrin family type drug.

5. If you do the procedure in the office, will I have to take a sedative and can I drive home?
Patients are given an oral sedative and do need a ride home.

6. Will I feel the pain?
While there is some discomfort putting in the local anesthesia, the procedure is quite comfortable and patients often sleep through the majority of the time they are in the office.
