While most women are very happy with their breast surgery, there can be a need for revision of previous procedures. Often these revisions are much more difficult and/or detailed than the first procedure.
Dr. Schwartz is an expert breast surgeon. He is a member of the Mentor Educational Council, and has traveled around the country and around the world to teach other surgeons, and to consult about the newest products and techniques. Patients come from across the country for his skill, artistry and experience. In addition, Dr. Schwartz has developed a national reputation for correction of previous breast surgery patients.
Your First Consultation
The most important visit with your plastic surgeon besides the surgery itself is your initial consultation. You will be able to discuss your goals, concerns and specific desires. You will discuss the specific details of your surgery including incision location, implant type, and implant position.
You should also be interviewing your prospective surgeon. You should feel your surgeon would care for you as if you were part of his own family. That your surgery was the most important, and that you are unique. It may never be truer that you get what you pay for. Do not shop for price alone.
Exchange From Saline To Silicone Implants
While saline implants can provide an excellent cosmetic result, many patients who received saline implants in the last few years are not happy with their outcome. Specifically, some patients feel their breasts are too hard, ripple, or do not look as natural as possible.
Capsular Contracture
A certain percentage of patients can have hardening of their implants leading to deformity or poor cosmetic result. This can require surgery to correct, and possibly replacement of the patients implants. Today’s data shows that this is no more common with silicone or saline implants. This procedure can also be covered by some insurance policies.
Breast Implant Removal
While it is very uncommon, some patients do choose to have their implants removed. This can be done alone, or sometimes safely with a breast lift to improve the breast shape when the implant volume is removed. Again, this procedure is much more difficult than the original surgery, and requires significant experience and surgical judgment.
Breast Implant Deflation
Saline implants can deflate and require replacement. This can be done with the implant warranty from either Mentor Corporation or Allergan, and our office will assist with the process to achieve this for you. In addition, this can be the opportunity to change implant size, have a lift, or switch to a different type implant if desired.
Previous Breast Surgery
Many patients have found Dr. Schwartz to correct the results of surgeries done in other physicians practices. He has developed a wide reputation for treating these problems. Revision breast implant surgery carries the greatest risk of additional problems, and should only be performed by a surgeon like Dr. Schwartz who specializes in breast surgery.
Breast Implant Revision Recovery
Breast implant revision usually requires 2-4 hours of surgery as an outpatient. You will be seen the first or second day after surgery, and can usually shower at that time. Many patients will only require Motrin or Advil for pain control, but stronger medications are available if needed.
Patients can usually drive to their one week appointment to remove sutures, and return to work at that time or even sooner.
Exercise can resume at three weeks after surgery without restrictions in most patients.
In revision cases, these restrictions may be longer, as well as the possibility that drains may be required after surgery.
Breast Augmentation Risks
While every procedure has risks, it is Dr. Schwartz goal to minimize every possibility of this during your care. You will receive extensive consultation regarding your surgery and any risks during your consultation and pre-op appointments.
