Nasal surgery is one of the most demanding areas in facial surgery. Because the nose is the central feature of the face, changes can be very dramatic. It is important carefully discuss your rhinoplasty goals with your surgeon to be sure the result of surgery is as close as possible to what you desire.
Dr. Schwartz strives to provide an individual approach to each patient. Dr. Schwartz is known for his natural results, with minimal bruising and swelling. Patients come from across the country for his skill, artistry and experience.
Your First Consultation
The most important visit with your plastic surgeon besides the surgery itself is your initial consultation. You will be able to discuss your goals, concerns and specific desires. You will discuss the specific details of your surgery, including incisions, risks, recovery and your expected results.
In addition, Dr. Schwartz likes to use imaging to help discuss each patient’s desires. At your consultation, Dr. Schwartz will take photographs, and use computer software to manipulate these while you discuss your goals. He will also email them to you so you can review them at home before making any decisions about surgery. While imaging can never be an exact surgical plan, it helps both the doctor and patient communicate more clearly.
You should also be interviewing your prospective surgeon. You should feel your surgeon would care for you as if you were part of his own family. That your surgery was the most important, and that you are unique. It may never be truer that you get.
Rhinoplasty Procedure
Dr. Schwartz uses the “open” technique for nasal surgery. This means that in most patients, a small incision is made in the columella (the bridge of skin between the nostrils) and this is connected to incisions inside the nose. This approach allows the doctor to look directly at the bone and cartilage of the nose, and manipulate their shape to improve the appearance of the nose.
Rhinoplasty Recovery
Nasal sutures are usually in place for 5 days. Most patients also have a plastic splint and tape on the nose to support the new shape and prevent bruising and swelling. Some patients also require packing or gauze inside the nose after surgery. This is less common. Most patients can be at work or social activities within 7-10 days. Occasionally bruising may last longer, but this can usually be covered with makeup. Improvement will be seen early in most patients, but it may take up to a year or longer to see your final result.
