Is a breast reduction right for you?
As Dr. Schwartz believes in truly personalized care, he determines candidacy for all of his procedures on an individual basis, following a careful examination and an open discussion about your needs, concerns and desired results.
However, there are a variety of ways you can tell that your breasts are too large for your body, and may benefit from an expert reduction. If you posses any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to make a consultation with Dr. Schwartz today, so he can provide you with more personalized guidance on whether or not this procedure is in your best interest:
- Your breasts appear quite large compared to your body frame.
- Your breasts are heavy, and your nipples and areolas point downward.
- One of your breasts is substantially larger than the other.
- You suffer from back, neck and shoulder pain because your breasts are so heavy.
- You commonly suffer from skin irritation underneath your breasts.
- Your bra leaves indentation marks on your shoulders from accommodating the weight of your breasts.
- Your breasts make it difficult for you to participate in physical activities.
An overview of breast reduction surgery
To prepare for a breast reduction, Dr. Schwartz will thoroughly explain what you can expect before, during and after the procedure during your initial consultation. During that time, he will carefully evaluate your unique needs and make recommendations to ensure an optimal outcome.
To begin your actual breast reduction surgery, one of our board certified anesthesiologists will administer general anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfort and safe. Dr. Schwartz will then make either a vertical or anchor incision in your breasts. For the vertical incision, a cut will be made around the nipple and down the front of the breast. This is most appropriate for women with both excess breast tissue and moderate drooping. For the anchor incision, a wider, anchor-shaped cut will be made above and around the nipple and extending down to the bottom crease of the breast. The anchor is most often used for women with severe drooping, excess breast tissue and a very low nipple position. As the incision is a critical aspect of your surgery, Dr. Schwartz will discuss the benefits and risks of each option and help you determine which incision is in your best interest.
After Dr. Schwartz has made the incision, he will expertly remove your excess skin, fat and tissue to sculpt the exact breast size you desire. From there, he will carefully adjust the position of the nipple and areola, before re-contouring the breast to achieve your ideal shape. He will then close the incisions in such a way to minimize any scarring, so the results of your breast reduction surgery are not only beautiful – but also extremely natural.
Occasionally, patients with extremely large breasts can have a reduction performed by liposuction alone. This procedure is more effective in younger patients with smaller volume excess, good skin quality and also in patients trying to treat uneven breasts.
